How to pray the Chaplet for the Dead

Traditional Catholic funeral rites, like many other Catholic rituals, include a rosary prayer service on the evening before a funeral. Though pre-Christian spiritual traditions used prayer beads, the custom spread throughout Christendom during the thirteenth century and became associated with Catholic tradition.

The Chaplet for the Dead contains 45 beads. It begins with the Crucifix, 5 introductory beads and 4 sets of 10 beads (40 beads). This Chaplet has no medal. The 40 beads are in memory of the 40 hours which Our Lord is thought to have spent in Limbo.

On the Cross Say De profundis
(Psalm 129 Out of The Depths)

1 Out of the depths have I cried unto Thee,
O Lord; * Lord, hear my voice.
2 Let thine ears be attentive *
to the voice of my supplication.
3 If thou, O Lord, shalt observe our iniquities ,
* O Lord, who shall endure it?
4 For with thee there is merciful forgiveness;
* and by reason of Thy law, I have waited for Thee, O Lord.
5 My soul hath relied on His word:
* my soul hath hoped in the Lord.
6 From the morning watch even until night,
* let Israel hope in the Lord.
7 Because with the Lord there is mercy,
* and with Him plentiful redemption.
8 And he shall redeem Israel
* from all his iniquities.

Or say Pater and Ave

Or Pater: Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. Amen.

Ave: Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee : Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners ; Now, and at the hour of our death. Amen.

At the funeral, in her beautiful prayers in the Mass of the dead, the Church with maternal solicitude places the souls of her departed children in the hands of St. Michael, that he may lead them into the kingdom of everlasting light. If St. Michael is so solicitous for the welfare of souls during their lifetime and at the hour of death, we may be certain that he will also befriend them during their stay in Purgatory, and will hasten to bring them consolation. “Michael, my Archangel,” sings the Church, “I have established thee Prince over all souls that are to be received into My Kingdom.” “Bowing down with his hands joined and placed upon the altar shortly after the elevation, the Celebrant of the Mass says: ‘We most humbly beseech Thee, Almighty God, to command these things to be carried by the hands of thy holy Angel to the Altar on high, in the sight of Thy Divine Majesty, that as many as shall partake of the most sacred Body and Blood of Thy Son at this altar may be filled with every heavenly grace and blessing.’
